Formed in 1961, they played their debut gig at the Spalding Youth Club on 21st January, that year. Griggs soon left to join The Bosscats. Green was at school with Bernie Rudd and Raymond Boz Burrell, who rehearsed with them in 1960 before going on to Lynn Tech and forming Lombard & The Tea Time Four. The band went out as Danny King & The Black Shadows, with frontman Trevor Twaite taking on the stage name Danny King. Grimwood was replaced by Pearl when they started to perform further afield.

From A Pictorial History Of Spalding: They were called Danny King and the Blackshadows based in the Spalding/Holbeach area. Played their first gig at Spalding Youth Club on 21/01/1961, after a couple of months they started to spread further afield and worked across into Norfolk, playing Kings Lynn Corn Exchange, The Kit Kat Hunstanton and The Rollerdrome at Cromer to name a few venues. Much of their work came via Nigel Portas Entertainments.

NB: Notes only - In this picture of the band taking part in The Tulip Parade, singer Danny King is on drums as Ged Pearl the regular drummer couldnt get time off work .I will post a pic of the full line up. Angela Green adds: Plus Trevor Twaite, Keith Green and the late Clive Bird - but who is the man sitting on the top? - As it was the Grounds Transport float Ted Hancock would most likely have been driving it but he is no longer with us.
