“I formed the band somewhere around 1983. Will is the only one whose surname I can’t remember. He was a fascinating character; a classic psychonaut, unafraid to try any hallucinogenic, and a great drummer, he later moved to London. Tragically, he died in a house fire. The BHAS was a dance band; we played mostly funk and jazz-funk. A local disco organiser saw the potential and started a regular Saturday, the Rio Club, which got us a weekly gig for a few months. But he got most of the money. I’d started a 4-piece before the BHAS, the Flying Opticians, which brought out a little EP on cassette around 1982.
I moved to Amsterdam in 1986 and have started a number of bands there over the years: Palo Santo (Latin), Son Latino (a very successful salsa orchestra), Hit & Run (a Second Line street band), and Impromptu (free-form music improv theatre). I got into translation (better and steadier money) but I still play professionally. These days I also play mandolin and sing.
