Formed by South, drummer of the resident Riverside Jazzmen at The Riverside Jazz Club, in February 1962. South conceded that only playing trad jazz limited booking options for gigs and that the new band would play mainstream jazz, along with standard old-time dance tunes. Few gigs are seen advertised for the band, which could indicate they mainly played private functions or did not last long.
