"Swing with the Hangmen" was the bands motto back in 1963. The nucleus of the group had formed while at Hellesdon Secondary Modern School in late 1962 and first rehearsals took place in Mick Crabtree’s garden shed, apparently along with a bit of smoking and drinking

Rehearsals then moved to the Branford Stores Public House backroom and Mick believes this is the venue were the group first played to an audience. In need of a manager the group called upon Mick’s brother John who was at the time working at Mann Eggerton. John would shift the gear about in his Ford Thames and went out to get the band gigs for a 10 shilling fee.

The groups break came in [date required] when they received a last minute call to back Pat Wayne & The Beachcombers at [venue required]. The band were bobbing around in the top half of the charts with their rendition of Chuck Berry’s, Bye Bye Johnny. After this support the band found gigs much easier to get says Mick.

John Marshall left the band in November 1964 to join The Circuit 5 and it appears the band after a few other line-up changes became The Cynics
