“We had been playing as The Vikings,” recalls Middleton. “In 1961 we changed bass player and became The Sundowners. Later that year Bubs White from The Chequers came over to us and Ivan went onto bass. In late 1963 The Chequers decided to reform and Bubs ask Rick and myself to go with him.TM 2017

The original bass player was a guy called Wills, who seems to have disappeared off the scene after we recruited Tony Bubs White from the recently-disintegrated Chequers on lead guitar and I moved to bass guitar.  Some time later I quit the band to join Johnny R ‘n B Phillips & The Hi-Fis on bass and I understand (found out years later) that this was when Rick Wills moved over to bass. Ricky goes on the play for (among others) Foreigner and Roxy Music, but this is apparently how he became a bass player. Bubs went on to play with a number of bands including The (Soul) Committee locally, eventually playing with the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band and Big Grunt." IC 2017
