Iain Hines was the musical brother of Frazer Hines, later to be seen as Joe Sugden in the soap Emmerdale. Iain met Bruno Koshmider, club owner of the Kaiser Keller in Hamburg, Germany, in early 1960. Koshmider was visiting London in the hope of finding a band for his club. Hines quickly put together The Jets, a name inspired by West Side Story and contained Norwich guitarist Tony Sheridan. They were offered a month’s work in Germany and became known as the first British band to play Hamburg. Although it should be noted here that Hines did not go out with the band until a few weeks later as his wife was giving birth to their son. He ended up working for Peter Eckhorn, owner of The Top Ten Club as musical director - see The Sabres. We have included him here after hearing that he ran auditions at The Gaumont in Ipswich to play in Hamburg. We would like to hear from anyone who auditioned for him at The Gaumont or any other venue in East Anglia.
