"I knew Johnny Roach and Mick Lynch through going to Catholic School (unnamed) and playing football. We would hang around at the Castle Hill Social Club up on Highfield Road and there was a café bar. We talked about starting a skiffle group. Johnny became the drummer because he had an Eric Delaney plastic snare, our guitarist was Derek Noller, he already had a guitar and would amplify it through an old cine-projector. Mick Lynch also played guitar, they then looked at me and said ‘You’ll have to be the bass player’ so I got myself a tea chest bass. We would play in the room at the top of the club. Later I told my father I was in a band, and he took me to the music shop (Sneeziums?) and he bought me a bass for £20, I had to pay him back, and did.

The first song I learned to play was The Shadows, Walk Don’t Run. I bought the single and played in over and over again on my Dads record player." JG 2023
