72 ST STEPHENS STREET
The original Trumpet public house situated on the corner of St Stephens and Coburg Street was knocked down to make way for the inner ring-road. In 1964 a replacement was completed and the name was resurrected.
Musically it only really features as a rock pub during the early to mid eighties; many Norwich rock outfits started their days here. The street outside would be lined with motorbikes and with the stage facing a nearly always open door you could hear the bands in the street quite clearly. As with many city centre pubs in the eighties it was given a posh make-over, although as Swifts it didn’t fair too well and closed in March 1989. The building then became part of the Co-op department store at the top of St Stephens Street. Further upgrades since mean that no trace of this former public house can bee seen. If you’re looking at the wall of Wilkinson’s Hardware store on the small piece of road which still is Coburg Street, you’re looking at the pub – Can you see what we mean?
