Woods had previously been in The Quaybouys. Boggis says that Brown had left The Beathovens to form the group with Overy. “We started as The Beathovens and changed name a few times before ending as The Samurai in mid 1965.” Said Boggis. Woods talks about the early days of the band in his book Keeping Time published shorty before his passing in 2016. “First rehearsals for the band were held at my house and then they moved to Dereks.” Woods could not recall if that was because his mother was sick and tired of the noise and smoke or it was just easier! Boggis and Saggers previously of The Samurai would both eventually end up with the group, Boggis as an additional vocalist and Saggers on bass. This allowed Read to become the groups out and out frontman. The group became Soul Reaction in early 1967.
