The Verdicts were a product of the Whiskey-A-Go Go coffee bar in Kings Lynn. "Alan and I both went to the King Edward grammar school and would hang out at the coffee bar." Said Paul Ritchie the bands guitarist. The Coffee bar was the hub of the Kings Lynn music scene and soon Paul & Alan had teamed up with guitarist Bob Cloudesley and from Sutton Bridge, Drummer Robin Goodman. Paul Ritchie whose real name was Richard Sexton began playing the guitar after a summer job working on local farms he bought himself a second hand guitar and then later a piano from a neighbour for £10. The group would often play at The Barn in Sutton Bridge to jog your memories it used to be the cinema. The group only lasted just over six months before Ritchie replaced Danny Eves in established Lynn group The Strollers

Richard would return to the name again in early 1968 when he spotted a group of lads rehearsing at [place required] youth club. The band were the remains of The Triffids from Wells and they form the West Raynham's, The New Verdicts

The final piece of the band came together while playing the USAAF Kestral Club at RAF West Raynham. Black serviceman Tony Spencer who would often get up and do a number with the band so they asked him to join the outfit. The group for a while went under the banner Tony Spencer & The New Verdicts, before becoming Spencers People in 1969
