The back bone of the group had been performing previously as The Surf Riders out at [area required]. John Jarvis had left his previous band The Planets because of work commitments but within months was eager to return to the scene and joined The Surf Riders to become Five by 5 (sometimes advertised as Five By Five). In 1965 the group entered the Mercury Beat contest playing in round three at the Olympia, Cromer on the 17th May. The group were unplaced in the competition and to top it all the nights winners and then the overall competition winners were ironically John's old band The Planets

The band had been helped by impresario Norman Troller who ran the Olympia, he help the band purchase equipment and got the band some gigs. The group folded in [date required] leaving John to join [area required] outfit Sons Of Thunder who later progressed into rock’n’roll revivalists group Page Nine
