David Beales had started strumming the guitar in 1963 but was inspired to switch to drums when his sister acquired a drumming boyfriend. He formed The Etruscans with some friends at Soham Grammar School but says the band only ever played one gig at a church-run youth club in Ely. “My first significant band was called The Signets. I think the band had been active since 1963,” said Beales. “I joined them in late 1965 after their previous drummer and bass player had left. Gordon Lupson came in on bass, and I replaced Derek, who had left to join another Ely band called The Amazons.” Ron Heber-Hall and Lupson left in late 1966 when the band combinded with The Shift and other new members to become Time Being.
